HCFC production phase-out

With the phase out of HCFC's such as R22, R408A and R409A rapidly approaching IDS has had a number of articles published in trade magazines warning of the impending phase out. Many are surprised to be told that stockpiled virgin product cannot be used after 31st December 2009 and that shortages may occur before that date.

An important calculation to think about is that if a contractor starts converting in September 2006, and achieved a rate of 1 system a month they would have only converted 28 systems by the start of 2009. Contractors who look after R22 systems need to be taking steps now to ensure that their customers do not suffer from interrupted supply, end users who have any amount of R22 systems need to put programs into place to ensure the same.

Consulting Engineer - July 2008

There is no doubt the number of companies converting HCFC equipment is steadily increasing. With just 75 weeks before use of virgin HCFCs for maintenance and servicing of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment becomes illegal, why are so many systems still to be replaced or converted to run on proven direct replacement refrigerants? What will be the real cost to those who don't take action now? Is it already too late to take the appropriate action?
